In Endless Summer Camp, Sophie Guisset extends her research into spaces of freedom and unexpected alliances. Drawing on her personal experience within scouting, she adopts its framework and structure but only in order to subvert its codes.
Welcome to a utopian summer camp for adults only, where performers create a temporary troupe and together explore desire, transgression and joy. Just as in the woods back then, the aim is to use one’s imagination to invent, build and organize a space for play, and to become one with the group.
Here, vice, perversion and self-transcendence are not taboos, but sources of pleasure and pride. The scouting spirit – facing the unexpected with ingenuity, being attentive to the world around us – becomes the driving force behind an intimate and collective exploration of desire and sexuality, experienced with vulnerability, humour and sensitivity.
Endless Summer Camp invites us to rethink our relation to desire and to imagine, together, new relational scenarios … and under the sun.
‘Born in Tournai in 1987, on a carnival night, I discovered theatre at 16 and decided to make it my career at 19. At 27 I moved to Berlin to train in contemporary dance, where discovering the work of Mette Ingvartsen permanently transformed my vision of performance.
My artistic practice revolves around intimacy, pleasure and play. I imagine spaces where the protagonists – or players – find the freedom and security to explore new experiences. My work draws inspiration from the social organization and political dimension of queer spaces, approached through a feminist lens: spaces situated outside heterosexual norms and the power dynamics that stem from them.
I also draw on popular everyday practices – tennis, jigsaw puzzles, cooking – to playfully subvert their social interactions, creating unexpected narratives and forms of exchange. In my creations, I explore the notions of vice, perversion and self-transcendence associated with non-normative sexual practices, revealing them as sources of pleasure, joy and pride. Benevolence and respect remain at the heart of my approach.”
