In Cursed and Crossed, five performers wander around the stage, each with a unique solitude. In turn, their dances outline forms from which monstrous figures emerge – fragile, unsettling, disarming.
For her first project, Charly Ange Fogaroli has drawn on horror, not as a genre that provokes fear, but as a space where marginal memories survive, memories that ask: ‘How does a cursed generation appropriate the aesthetics of the monstrous and horrific to construct its relation to the world? And what if monstrosity were no longer a form of exclusion, but a shared space of transformation?’
Through a lens steeped in dark romanticism, Cursed and Crossed evokes nostalgia for a future already lost. In this vast echo chamber, its orphaned ghosts eventually form a community.
‘My name is Charly Ange Fogaroli. I grew up in Ardèche, in the south of France, with my mother. Before dance, I was a high-level athlete for fifteen years: five training sessions a week, intensive competitions every weekend. This discipline shaped my relationship with my body, with endurance and with the collective.
In 2019 injuries forced me to stop. I sold my car and moved to London. In the city’s underground scene, I discovered cabaret, alternative music and musicals. At 22 I took my first classes in voguing as well as contemporary and classical dance. It was a revelation: I learned to connect states I’d always kept separate – power and vulnerability, control and letting go.
Today, my choreographic practice combines dance, live music and cabaret. Inspired by the iconography of women and queers in horror, as well as by subcultural aesthetics, I explore hybrid figures, somewhere between the sublime and the monstrous, to give shape to inner currents beyond words.
My approach is resolutely collaborative: each project emerges from encounters, images, texts or sounds, transformed by the performers and their practices. I hold a master’s in choreographic research and practice from Charleroi Danse, and I perform and collaborate with artists such as Olivia Grandville, François Chaignaud, Yves-Noël Genod and Benjamin Abel.’
