With STONE, her first project, Garance Maillot revisits, on stage, a personal turning point – the death of her grandfather – which prompted a question: ‘What are we to do with our legacies?’
Garance narrates, sings and dances, sometimes all at once. She summons lesbian and queer figures from the history of dance who appear as doubles, active ghosts, presences who paved the way and shift memory.
With STONE, Garance Maillot explores the notion of legacy as a living phenomenon: unpredictable forces, at once joyful and melancholy. This journey generates a dance that creates a community, where the intimate becomes the driving force behind a collective gesture. An ode to love, and to those who make it possible.
‘Originally from Pré-Saint-Gervais, the smallest municipality in Île-de-France, I grew up on the outskirts of Paris, between red-brick social housing blocks and factories converted into artist studios. After some time in Montreal, I arrived in Brussels, where I completed my training as a dancer in 2024, before going on to work with choreographers and artists such as Jorge Léon, Simone Aughterlony, the Tumbleweed company and Serge Aimé Coulibaly.
One of the turning points in my life was the death of my grandfather, a key figure in my upbringing. At his funeral, when I was asked to pay tribute to him, my instinct was to dance. Despite some sceptical reactions – people considering the gesture inappropriate for a Catholic service – I decided to go through with it. I danced on his grave. I retain from that dance the memory of an intensely unsettling emotion: grief mingled with deep relief. I also noticed that this dance managed to create a sense of community among those present. In a mysterious way, bridges were built between us.
This experience led me to question the notion of legacies: the legacies we don’t choose and the ones we decide to embrace. I began to research lesbian and queer dancers and choreographers in the history of dance. Drawing on these references, which became a genealogy, I developed a choreography based on fragmentation and dissociation. In my work, dance engages in dialogue with other media – i.e. text and song as well as plastic, textile and mineral materials – in order to better explore the body and its relationship to the world.’
